Jeff Ashed of Oxfam America was visiting his mother in San Diego, so we rented a sailboat and talked innovative ways of using modern communications in less developed countries. This was taken with a Canonn Powershot digital camera in movie mode, into the sun, in 20 knots of wind. Here is Jeff’s presentation at the Wellesley Uplift Academy Workshop

Interview with Wilson Goode, winner of $100,000 2006 Purpose Prize

Wilson Goode is one of the winners of the 2006 Purpose Prize Awards. He is perhaps best known for his two terms as mayor of Philadelphia (from 1984 to 1992). But in 2000, at age 62, Goode earned a Doctorate of Ministry and took a job as director of Amachi, a nonprofit established to help the 7 million children who have one or both parents either in jail, on parole, or under state or federal supervision. The problem was close to his heart — when he was 14, Goode’s father was sent to jail for assaulting Goode’s mother. (more…)

Interview with Purpose Prize Fellow Cowboy Fred Ortiz

Cowboy Fred Ortiz, 63, was named one of the 2006 Purpose Prize Fellows by Civic Ventures. He saw something in the youth of Lubbock, Texas that he recognized all too well, and it pained him. Ortiz grew up in an economically depressed area of South El Paso, Texas, and witnessed many of his peers failing to thrive and resistant to opportunities that might provide them an avenue toward education and a more productive life.
